Heart Hospital of New Mexico at Lovelace Medical Center first in New Mexico to use pulse field ablation to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

ALBUQUERQUE – August 21, 2025 – Heart Hospital of New Mexico at Lovelace Medical Center (HHNM) today announced it completed New Mexico’s first OMNYPULSE™ Platform pulse field ablation (PFA) system to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AFib) in symptomatic patients who do not benefit from medication. Michael Hoskins, MD, electrophysiologist with New Mexico Heart Institute/Lovelace Medical Group, performed the procedure, which both maps the heart and treats it at the same time, freeing the surgeons from having to switch tools during a procedure, saving time under sedation for the patient.

AFib is a heart rhythm disorder where the heart’s upper chambers beat irregularly and often very rapidly, leading to dizziness, fatigue and shortness of breath. It can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications.

“The special large-tip design of the OMNYPULSE™ system allows us to treat more area at one time,” said Dr. Hoskins. “This helps the procedure to go quicker and also gives me real-time feedback on the treatment. The system tells myself and fellow electrophysiologists if we are pressing just right and applying enough PFA energy for a lasting fix for the patient.”

AFib is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia and affects more than 8 million people in the U.S. and nearly 50 million people worldwide. Approximately one in four adults over the age of 40 are at risk for developing AFib and one-third of patients with AFib are unaware they have the condition. It often goes unrecognized until the onset of complications.

“HHNM prides itself on being the only hospital in New Mexico dedicated to heart care,” said Brian Miller, chief executive officer of HHNM. “Performing the first OMNYPULSE™ PFA in the state is proof of our dedication to providing the highest quality of cardiovascular care to our patients, all while staying close to home.”
