Graduate Nurse Residency

Lovelace Health System has partnered with the University of Iowa to provide a 12-month Entry to Practice (ETP) Nurse Residency Program that supports graduate nurses as they transition into their first professional nursing role. The program offers an individualized comprehensive orientation plan, immersive learning opportunities, nursing professional development, quality/safety performance improvement integration, and a supportive team-oriented environment.

Lovelace Health System (LHS) was awarded the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP), signifying that the hospital is following best practices and utilizing an evidence-based curriculum that is focused on helping the new graduate nurse transition from student nurse into professional nursing practice. LHS is one of only 249 programs in the world who have received this accreditation.

Qualifications:

  • Nursing student must have graduated or will be graduating from an accredited school of nursing prior to the cohort start state.
  • The program is open to new LPNs and RNs within their first 12 months of nursing.
  • The candidate must have successfully passed the NCLEX and hold an unencumbered nursing license in NM or in a compact state.
  • Willingness to participate in all program components
  • Current BLS; hiring department may also require ACLS and or PALS. *These can be taken through Lovelace education within the first 90 days of employment.
  • One-year post-program completion work commitment agreement required

Transition to Critical Care Fellowship

Are you interested in becoming a certified critical care nurse? Join our adult critical care teams in Cardiac and Adult Medical critical care settings today and you will be enrolled in our fellowship program that will support the whole first year of your critical care journey! At the end of the program, you will be eligible to sit for your Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification exam offered by the Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Lovelace Health System is excited to offer this Critical Care Fellowship for experienced nurses seeking to enter the Critical Care specialty. This year-long program offers a comprehensive orientation plan, immersive learning opportunities, development of critical care knowledge and skills, and a supportive team-oriented environment.

The program curriculum offers education and training to include specialty-focused online modules, advanced skills labs, inter-professional care team shadowing, and practice-based learning. Participants will attend class every other week for the first 12 weeks and then transition to monthly classes thereafter. Learning plans will include assignment of the Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) offered through the Association of Critical Care Nurses and guest speakers that have subject matter expertise.

Ideal candidates are nurses with at least one-year experience in medical/surgical, progress care, or intermediate care units. Other candidates will be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Nurse Externship Program

Designed for senior nursing students, our Nurse Extern Program bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world clinical practice. Gain hands-on, paid hospital experience while completing your degree — all in a supportive, cohort-based environment.program upon passing your NCLEX. While working as a Nurse Extern you can work independently as a Patient Care Tech with an expanded scope that will allow you to practice foundational nursing skills. These skills will include IV starts, blood draws, and other line placement after you have been trained and demonstrated competency.

Program Details:

  • Work your extern shift 1:1 with an experienced nurse to apply skills you are learning in school
  • Rotate 10 weeks at each Lovelace hospital (Lovelace Medical Center, Heart Hospital of New Mexico @ Lovelace Medical Center, Lovelace UNM Rehabilitation Hospital and Lovelace Regional Hospital)
  • Debrief after each rotation with clinical leaders to reflect on:
    • Patient care experiences
    • Skill development
    • Challenges and successes
    • One-on-one coaching and Q&A opportunities
